Measurement must be integrated into the architecture lifecycle from the beginning, not deferred to production. Quality attributes (performance, scalability, availability, security) have distinct measurement characteristics and pitfalls — architects should understand how to measure each specifically. The four-quadrant measurement framework (artifact/operational × external/internal) provides a practical taxonomy for when different measurements become available and what insights they provide. MTTR is more important than MTBF for most systems; RPO and RTO provide more actionable availability targets than "the nines." Fitness functions don't make measurement easier — they help use measurements effectively to guide architectural work.
