Software architecture is a sociotechnical discipline — it reflects and shapes the organisation's communication structures (Conway's Law). Architecture must be intentional: decisions should be guided by domain KPIs and organisational metrics, not reactive to immediate technical pressures. The KPI Value Tree (organisational KPIs → domain KPIs → technical metrics) is the primary tool for connecting software architecture decisions to business strategy. EventStorming (Big Picture and Process Modeling variants) is the primary technique for surfacing the implicit knowledge needed to make architecture intentional. Goodhart's Law is the central warning: when metrics become targets, they cease to be useful guides.
