Books in this wiki: Site Reliability Engineering, Reliable Machine Learning

Background

Niall Richard Murphy is a Site Reliability Engineer based in Dublin and one of the four editors of the SRE book. He led Google's Ads SRE team in Europe and has worked on production engineering across multiple Google services. He has also published independently on internet history and engineering practice.

Core Positions

Murphy's editorial influence is visible in the book's treatment of incident response, postmortem culture, and the boundary between service operation and platform engineering. His perspective brings the long view of European internet infrastructure to chapters discussing scale, federation, and the cross-site coordination problems unique to global services.

Books

Site Reliability EngineeringSite Reliability Engineering (2016)

Co-editor; the book's emergent-management and federation chapters bear his imprint, as do the chapters covering incident response and managing reliability across geographically distributed sites.

Reliable Machine LearningReliable Machine Learning (2022)

Co-author; brings direct SRE lineage from the original SRE book into the ML context, arguing that ML systems are production systems deserving the same engineering discipline, plus additional vigilance for ML-specific failure modes.
